About Chingay

How It Started

The Chingay Parade started in February 1973 as a street parade in celebration of the Lunar New Year.
Following the ban of firecrackers in Singapore, former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew suggested to celebrate the Chingay festival to compensate for the ban.

Since then, the parade has become an annual celebration showcasing Singapore's rich culture. The Chingay Parade is celebrated by performers of all ethnicities putting up various cultural performance in elaborate costumes. The parade also showcases a display of intricate floats.

Chingay now owns the reputation as one of Asia’s largest street performance and float parade, a colourful epitome of the country’s multi-cultural society.
